Conference Tracks
The conference estimates a total of 24 talks, some followed by a debate, and 12 workshops focusing on Big Data applied to each of the following domains:
Data driven journalism
Data driven journalism is the journalistic field that rose from electronic investigation. It's the process of analysis and filtering of big data sets into something that's understandable by the general public. The open data movement and the leakage of confidential electronic data - whistleblower - are amongst the biggest news in contemporary journalism. The processing, analysis and visualization of the enormous amounts of data available on the Internet are usually performed by open source tools, and is changing journalism itself to offer the general public a new type of service capable of helping consumers, enterpreneurs, politicians and activists into grasping reality and making decisions based on precise information.
Bioinformatics
This year's edition will offer professionals in the biology and health fields the opportunity to get together and interact with professional software developers. The main goal is to approximate professionals from biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics and other fields that work on analysis and development with professionals from the brazilian Perl community. Scientists involved in health and biology have a growing need to deal with several different kinds of data, often un huge amounts that require more and more knowledge of mathematics, statistics and programming. At the conference, it will be discussed the role of bioinformatics in modern biology, current technologies for data generation and the importance of open-source tools and platforms in the biology world.
Big data are data sets that grow so large - beyond terabytes of information - that conventional tools for data manipulation become inappropriate for the task at hand. Big data allows the identification of patterns and tendencies with very high precision in business, health and public politics, and the challenges to manipulate such data involve capture, storage, research, sharing, analysis and visualization.
Enterpreneurship and Public Policies
The strategic importance of Perl as a business opportunity and as a tool for political and social activism. Success cases in Brazil of Perl applied to the public, private and non-profit fields.
The Perl Hacking track contemplates talks and debates on Perl 5 and Perl 6, real world applications and beginner workshops to newcomers willing to create their first Perl program and also to developers interested in participating in the development of new modules and of the language itself.
